Brown will add another dimension to his diverse resume. G. Brown & Friends will be an up close and personal evening with pop music artists featured in Brown’s recent book Colorado Rocks!. “G. Brown & Friends is the book Colorado Rocks! converted into a live interview show with plenty of music,” said Bob Byrd, co-founder of Nissi’s. The book is a 179-page encyclopedia of the past 50 years of rock music performed in Colorado. It covers everyone from legends like Bob Dylan to local artists like Big Head Todd and the Monsters. The book has been a hit with Colorado music fans and is also getting national recognition. “Colorado is a spiritual place for people in the music business as well as the fans,” said Brown. “I tried to capture that feeling and put it down on paper.” Brown is currently working on a third book, History of the Concert Era, a photo-intensive chronicle of the music performed at Red Rocks Amphitheater. Plans for the first few editions of G. Brown & Friends will showcase such artists as John McEuen of The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Jerry Corbetta of Sugarloaf, John Magnie of the Subdudes, and Richie Furay of Poco. “It won’t be my version of rock history,” says Brown. “It’s all about the artists telling their own stories...sort of like Inside the Actor’s Studio meets Storytellers." The show’s format will consist of two 50-minute sets with a break in between when audience members can suggest questions for Brown to ask his guest. Beyond just an interview, the artists will perform an unplugged session with possible accompaniment by other musicians for a concert second set. “I want to learn the stories behind the songs. Every few minutes, I’ll just shut up and let my guest play,” said Brown. “This format will be more than just a performance; it will be an intimate experience, a way for people to interact with their favorite musicians.” Each session of G. Brown & Friends will be recorded, with plans for a compilation CD down the road. The show’s format has not been completely scripted, however. “Things like this find their own rhythm and momentum,” said Brown. “It will be a casual environment, but the model will be different for each performer.” Regardless of format, G.’s knowledge of the rock music world, along with the show’s intimate setting at Nissi’s, will guarantee an audience experience that is hard to find anywhere else.
