Artists' Comments Photo Gallery Links More than once, Janine Gastineau has been accused of being all over the map, musically speaking. She sings (& swings) jazz with assurance, performs show tunes and standards with style, emotion, and beautifullly phrasing, and has a growing repertoire in Brazilian samba and French chanson. An avid Stephen Sondheim fan, she has already co-created and performed a revue of his songs, and is working on her second. She secretly loves Elvis & Patsy Cline. She adores harmonizing, esp in 3-part arrangements, and plays a mean frog rasp. Musical since childhood, Janine first played the viola and then the oboe before settling in to her primary instrument: her voice. After years singing and dancing in musicals in summer stock & dinner theatre, she settled in to her favorite kind of performing: “As myself. For most of my life, I was never brave enough to come out from behind a character. But the more I listened to Frank and Ella and Bille and Rosemary, the more I wanted to perform that way: putting my own spin on the songs I loved. Jazz, which demands you add something to the conversation, is perfect for that.” Janine’s eclectic repertoire also reflects her individuality: Great American songbook standards share space with Disney tunes, songs by Bill Withers, Jobim & Bonfa, the Doors, Sting, Miles & Monk, the Beatles and more, all swung in a jazz vein and sung in Janine’s soulful, heartfelt style.
